5 card tarot reading

This reading is one I designed to reflect my belief that choice is key, and that we co-create our future.

The first three cards show past lessons, lessons now, and upcoming lessons, just as with a 3 card pathway reading. Then it adds an advice card, which is usually food for thought to shed light on your question or current situation. The last card is an ‘outcome’ card, another way things can go based on your choices, actions, omissions, words, intentions, etc.

This reading is available by e-mail and phone for $30

Q. I was recently married, and we are very different people, although we love each other very much. Any thought how to keep the love and relationship strong?

Often I look at Tarot as a folk-art. An organic, natural way of giving and receiving advice. And that is very much the flavor of this reading…very earthy, and like something a Grandmother would say at your wedding. While it may be full of grandma-isms, it also hints at basic truths about loving relationships too.

The general pattern shows two major arcana cards…which shows the depth of emotion here and how important of a lesson this is… this is a relationship to be nurtured, revered, and cherished. At the same time, it is still the minor arcana in the majority…so no major red light crisis here. Bumps in the road are inevitable, but will resolve – perhaps easier than you might expect.

The past lessons card is “the Fool” from the major arcana. That isn’t to say either of you is foolish or that taking on this relationship was foolish…language has changed a lot since the cards first came around. A more modern understanding would be “the innocent” or even “the comedian”… This card is simply a reminder. Remember to laugh and play and not take everything too seriously.

Remember the things that attracted you to each other in spite of the differences. Think too, of those wedding bands with the braid like design on them…both people aren’t clones of each other, neither are they two halves of one seamless whole…far from it. Relationships like this are best when made up of two people who are whole and complete on their own but who chose to twine their lives together into something that is greater than the sum of the parts.

This card also symbolizes the beginning of a journey and the infinite possibilities that lie in any beginning. How things unfold and what direction things go is up to you to decide…you are by no means locked into any one path…you choose your highway and destination at the beginning, where you are now.

Next is the 9 of wands….wands have to do with your spiritual journey. The feeling here is one of “so what”…so what if you are different? So what if there are challenges and disagreements over the course of a lifetime? If you accept love and trust each other, then the differences and differences of opinion are just an opportunity for you both to learn together, in ways you could never learn and grow on your own. Love and acceptance of each other is the key. If that is the bottom line, then debate away Live, love and laugh, different or not. What comes to mind here is James Carville and Mary Matlin…political opposites who have been married a really long time.

The next card is the other major arcana card: Strength. If you have the strength to deal with each other honestly and with integrity and openness, then you have the strength to make anything work.

The next is the knight of swords. Its meaning is ‘daring’. It take real courage to look at yourself in the mirror and see things honestly. Could it be the differences you see in your mate are just things in yourself that you don’t recognize? There may be an element of self-discovery here. Also are the differences real – or are they a social perception, what your families and others think of you, not the real ‘yous’ that each other sees? So if the difference lie in other’s perceptions…then be daring? What is the harm in being avante gaurde, out of the mainstream, daring or different?

The final card is the king of coins. Its meaning is trust. Although it is a coins card, this one has to do with intangible riches, not the money kind. It is a reminder to look beneath the surface to things that really matter and then trust…trust what you see, trust yourself that you are seeing the real thing. Trust yourself that you made the right choice. Trust him to love you and trust yourself to love him.

To sum up, I look at this intuitively. The images might relate to the cards and question, or it may not. They might make sense right away, or not. They are food for thought, and very personal to you, like an image from a dream…so I give them to you as I get them and leave it up to you to decide about their meanings, relevance, and validity.

First I sense a male, outdoors, active, athletic sort of energy. Something about a lake, blues and grays of fresh water, small boats or jet-ski kind of craft. Lots of splashing and sun. Is one of the differences between you that one is more athletic and outdoors loving than the other?

I see the image of books, intellect, learning. Globes, compasses, like a library or college. The colors blue and silver come to mind. The silver is glittery, like a brocade pattern on a blue satin gown or something.

Now I see an old fashioned pocket watch, gold. My mind is drawn to the book / movie “The Golden Compass” and I hear the words for you “know your own daemon”…in that book, the daemon refers to soul and an animal totem. Are you familiar with it? Here I ‘hear’ (meaning the intuitive information comes as words rather than images) “look into all your possible worlds” and I get the mental image of the aurora borealis and stars. Do either of you have an interest in astronomy? Such lovely images here…

One point of difference where you might have to accept and allow, rather than try to bend the other to join along is spirituality. One might have a more spiritual nature (you I suspect) while the other is more pragmatic, even atheist. Allow yourself to feel and journey…allow your mate to follow their true nature. Don’t judge, but learn from the other point of view while at the same time allowing yourself to follow your own true nature, accepting the two paths can be closely parallel, even twined together.

At that the energies withdraw.
