From The Archives: Are Tarot Cards Demonic?

It’s that Halloween time of year, and all the classic horror themes are back. Seemed like a good time to bring this one out of the archives and refine it a bit.

Q: Are Tarot cards demonic?

A: No.

This is a heavy-hitting question, so please allow me to stir controversy right off the bat: Hell and demons are a religious construct, not a spiritual one. Religious people might give you a different answer, but as I see it, religion and spirituality are totally opposite things (Related: Ghost of Zombie Cat) . I believe that Tarot is a combination of science and spirituality with religion having no part in the process. No religion = no demons.

The scientific part has to do with resonance and vibration. Think of guitar strings. Pluck one string and it vibrates at a certain frequency and makes a certain note. Twang a different size string and you get a different note. If two separate strings are similar in just the right way (same note, just an octave apart) then you can play one string and the other vibrates along with it. I think the music term for that is harmonic resonance, or something like that.

Tarot cards are like the guitar pick, not the note. Tarot cards are not the sound (the energy)…they just help us hear it. Just like the guitar string you choose and play sets the tone for a song, the energy you choose sets the tone for your Tarot experience. If you vibrate on the demon note, you have a bigger chance of resonating a “demonic” experience. If you vibrate at the “guidance” note then that’s what you’ll get.  The old adage of “you get out of it what you put into it” has a sort of literal truth here. Expect hell fire, and you might get it. Expect happy, you just might get that too.

You may have heard of ghost-hunters and other spiritual / paranormal workers talk about “surrounding themselves with light” as a means of protection. This works in our sound-energy guitar string example. You can tune your guitar string. You can very deliberately go into a reading with an intent to love and learn, and that is the resonant energy the reading will help to reveal.

Here is a very powerful image from my friend and mentor, psychic Joy Star. Think of a house on a dark night. Imagine the house filled with cheery lights and a cozy fire in the fireplace. If you open the front  door what happens? Does the outer dark come rushing in and extinguish the light, or does the light pour out of the open door and show you what is out there in the dark? This isn’t saying that the dark doesn’t exist. It doesn’t mean that houses can’t lose power or that disasters don’t happen to people who “think positive” all the time. This is the real world. Of course bad stuff happens. But good stuff happen too. If you fill yourself with light before opening the door then you can see what is hidden without the darkness coming in. Fear and superstition turns your lights out. When you are afraid or angry, then dark meets dark at the door.

Whether you see ‘demonic’ as an energy vibration or a real entity, it isn’t something inherent to the cards. It has to do with the people involved.  “Like attracts like”.   The life – lessons you need have a way of showing up at your doorstep. Sometimes we can take a hint. Sometimes we need hit over the head with a message before we can hear it. It never fails to amaze me how well a reading will tune itself to the notes and energies we need to hear, not the ones we want or expect to hear. Being confronted with very, very hard lessons isn’t demonic. It’s life.

By the same token, if you are genuinely afraid of the cards, then don’t deny or minimize that. It is what it is. Tarot isn’t the right learning tool for everyone. There are lots of way for spiritual learning to come through. The love and learning will find a way. If your religious beliefs are in conflict with Tarot readings, then simply find your guidance in a way that is comfortable and right for you. From my side of things, it is incredibly difficult to do a good reading for someone who is so conflicted about Tarot that they can barely hear what the session has to say anyway. If you are worried Tarot cards are “deomonic” but you still want that style of guidance, no problem. There are many oracles from which to choose: cartomancy (playing cards) I Ching, tea leaves, palm lines, you name it.

Tarot cards aren’t demonic. It’s way worse than that. Tarot cards are reflective. Tarot cards aren’t evil, they are a mirror showing you what’s on our inside. Choose fear, see fear. Choose love, see love. Choose courage and compassion, and you’ll see a beautiful you…not a demon….looking back at you from the Tarot cards.
